The article presents the results of the first  investigation on the food allergy and the oral allergy syndrome in Bulgarian adults. The prevalence of the condition is about 32% among patients with pollenosis. The underlying mechanisms and the main foods evolving severe reactions are pointed out. We underline the role of the general practitioners in the early recognition of the food allergy symptoms. The main diagnostic and therapeutic procedures should be performed by a specialist in clinical allergology. The patient and his relatives should be informed in details about the foods which must be avoided and instructed to read carefully the contents of the food products. The allergologist should prescribe emergency set with adrenaline and give thorough instructions for its use when severe  reaction occurs. It is highly recommended that   the patients were provided with brochures with clear instructions about  their condition and the ways of avoiding life-threatening situations. Supplying with individual cards and bracelets containing the address and phone number of the patient and his relatives would be of great help in cases of emergency and may prevent eventual fatalities.

Key words: food allergy and anaphylaxis, oral allergy syndrome (OAS), food-dependent-exercise induced anaphylaxis, prophylaxis.
